If you already use Apple’s Mail then chances are you are perfectly happy with it and see no reason to change. This is perfectly reasonable because it is a great mail client but if you are still looking for one or simply want a change, Inky could be what you are looking for and since it is a completely free Mac download, it is worth a look.
Inky stands out above other mail clients simply because it is so friendly and it makes emailing a much more leisurely activity. You will need to open an account but once that is done you can add your email details from existing accounts and it takes just seconds to add each one. At this point you will notice how helpful Inky is as it keeps you completely informed as to what is going on.
Inky is incredibly easy to use and is also highly accessible due to it being cloudd-based. This means you can access your account through as many computers as you need, wherever you are, and no matter how many email accounts you have set up with it, all you will need is one, single Inky password to get to them. Better still, it is compatible with the Mountain Lion Notification Center so you can see when you have new mail waiting.
Once you are in you will see the very economic interface that lets you do a lot with a little. The layout is satisfyingly simple and consequently easy to navigate, with icons on the side providing quick, easy access to your various accounts, while your message list is on the right. Selecting a message will present you with a preview of its contents. From here you can customise the layout to your liking while various filters make it much easier to locate certain messages. All the other standard organisational tools are present and correct, such as rearranging them by date or author. In addition to this is a Smart Views option that will allow Inky to recognise messages from contacts in your address book, social networks and various other options too, depending on what you are looking for.
Inky is pretty smart in general and even learns from your behaviour with handling emails. For example, if you favour messages from a certain person the program will pick up on this and make sure messages from that contact are designated as more relevant. There is even a nice little icon that indicates whether a contact is becoming more or less popular with you.
Everything is laid out in a visually appealing way that is easy to comprehend and navigate. It is simple in general and only rarely will you need to toy around with it to get the hang of something. Overall though the controls are intuitive and it is a highly convenient way to keep on top of your emails, however many accounts you may have. Features are minimal and it really is geared solely towards emails so if you are looking for other organisational tools, such as a calendar, you may want to look elsewhere but otherwise, Inky is an excellent email client.
